Historic White's Mill
One of Abingdon's most popular attractions is historic
White's Mill, a water-powered grist mill dating back to
the early 1790's. White's Mill played a prominent role in
the American Civil War by providing flour and corn meal to
the rebel army.
Union troops attempted to destroy the mill on several
occasions, and during Stoneman's Raid they succeeded in
tearing the large water wheel from its axle - but a timely
thunderstorm prevented them from burning the building to the
ground!

White's Mill has been used for several purposes over the
years, including a post office and polling venue. Today, it
is back in use as a mill - with the grinding wheels powered
by electricity instead of water. But the owners have just
received a $400,000 grant to restore this historic building
back to it's original state - including a new sluice to
drive the wheel!
When planning your Abingdon vacation, be sure to include a
trip to historic White's Mill!
