The Martha Washington Inn
Beautiful Abingdon, Virginia has plenty of options for
lodging during your visit, but instead of the usual hotel or
bed & breakfast, why not enjoy the history and comfort of
the magnificent Martha Washington Inn?

The historic building that is now the Martha Washington Inn
has served Abingdon well for the better part of 200 years,
and in several capacities. General Francis Preston
paid a then-whopping $15,000 to have the building
constructed for use as his family's private residence way
back in 1832.
In 1858, the Preston mansion was sold for the small fortune
of $21,000 - and subsequently converted into a women's
college. The new owners named the institution Martha
Washington College as a tribute to the former First Lady of
the United States.
During the next 70 years Martha
Washington College turned out class after class of
distinguished, well educated young ladies - except during
the Civil War when the building was used as a hospital and barracks.
After the college finally closed its doors in 1932, the
building stood empty for a time until the Barter Theatre
began using it to house its actors. "The Martha's"
current life as a top-tier hotel began in 1935, and she has been
treating her guests to the very best in accommodations and
service ever since.
No Abingdon, Virginia vacation is complete without a stay at the
beautiful and historic Martha Washington Inn. You'll step
back into another time and enjoy the original architecture,
antique furnishings and old-fashioned service while you bask
in the lap of modern day luxury!
